Nintendo has come such a long way since the dawn of 8-bit video gaming! When I first purchased the Nintendo Wii, I was not quite sure what to think about the new motion-gaming system. The idea of swinging controllers around was kind of confusing, as I had always been used to mashing buttons on a traditional controller. I eventually fell in love with the Wii, just as I had fallen for the original NES.

Now that I have a son of my own and he is old enough to play video games and understand the controls, I decided to go purchase a second Nintendo Wii and went on the search to find the best Wii games for kids aged 5-10. I favor games of a more mature rating and was not positive which Nintendo Wii games were targeted at a younger age group.

I was not quite sure where to look so asked a buddy of mine which Wii games were the best. He kindly directed me to a website that had everything I was looking for. Now the two of can play together over a wi-fi connection and enjoy some really cool versions of some of the classics that I played as a boy, and my son has never been more appreciative!

The Wii gaming system has been a great addition to our family and we have spent many hours playing games together. The company has even added games that are perfect for our preschooler to play and the controller is easy enough for him to use making the games entertaining for him.

I recommend World of Zoo, which is a game that my 8 year old enjoys as much as my 4 year old. My oldest child can create her own zoo, while my 3 year old can pick his favorite animal and play with it. When their creature needs something like a drink or food a click of the A button will drop it down for them.

I purchased the fitness game Nickelodeon Fit because I already had the balance board and wanted more ways to use it. I like that the Wii can keep my kids active and this game has given them many hours of fun while exercising. My kids have enjoyed the characters from Nick Jr. such as Dora, Diego and my 3 year old loves jumping rope with the Backyardigans.

I’ve been pleased with the fact that the Wii is a gaming system that we can all play together despite everyone’s age differences.

One of the best things about the Wii is that it’s designed with features to make playing easy, whether offline or online. The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is one such feature. Everyone knows that the Wii has an 8-2.11b/g wireless adapter that allows the user to get online with any compatible wireless internet service. Users can also connect to a wired LAN with a USB Ethernet adapter. However, the Wi-Fi Connection doesn’t refer to just the process of getting online, but an actual service to make online multiplayer gaming easy and safe. Up to 32 players can connect on compatible games, as well as using the Wi-Fi Connection for matchmaking, checking scoreboards, participating in tournaments, and accessing downloadable content. Players can also exchange Friend Codes with trusted users to open up other features. There are two other main features: Pay & Play, where users can spend Nintendo Points to access new content and services for special games, and WiiConnect24, which keeps the system connected even in standby and can send and receive data for certain games even when they are not being played. Animal Crossing: City Folk, released in 2008, is one of the best examples of a WiiConnect 24 game. Special content is periodically sent out to online players for special holidays or new game releases. Most sports titles being released now are sure to have online compatibility. A list of all the compatible Wi-Fi Connection games is too long to list here, but some of our non-sports favorites are

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Geometry Wars: Galaxies

Monster Hunter Tri

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor

Tetris Party

However, with new titles being released all the time, this list is sure to change at any moment. This isn’t even taking into account all of the titles available over the WiiWare network that offer some form of online play, including Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, Gradius Rebirth, Mega Man 10, Uno, and Water Warfare. When purchasing a new game, check to see if it’s compatible with the Wi-Fi Connection. That little symbol is a sign that your gameplay experience is about to explode on to the next level.

Wipeout may be one of the most aptly-titled television shows of recent history. The series is a mix of game-show and slapstick comedy, with contestants falling all over themselves (and each other, and the numerous obstacles placed in their way) in the hopes of gaining a cash prize. Wipeout: The Game follows the show’s format to the letter, and manages to capture most of the fun with none of the pain. Each game consists of four rounds and can handle up to four players. First, all players take turns on the initial obstacle course with its signature threats, including a wall of boxing gloves and the big red balls. The balls are one of the first options to really admire the physics engine of the game, as your on-screen avatar is helplessly flung from one to the next with little real chance of making it across. The graphics themselves are nothing to write home about, but come onfor a licensed game show product, no one was expecting much. The fact that the game actually delivers on most fronts is a pleasant surprise. Following the first course are two rounds where all four players compete at once. These will be familiar to any fans of the show. The game culminates with another, harder obstacle course.Among the differences from the actual show is the fact that all players make it to the final round, rather than being weeded out along the way. Another is that players who aren’t competing can throw balls at the single player, either as distraction or attempting to hit targets which will affect obstacles on the course. However, the rest of the game will be instantly recognizable, down to the animated hosts John Henson and John Anderson. The only real downside is that the collision detection can give you fits, as objects that you’ve clearly avoided will sometimes still knock you off your feet. Still, for a solid party game, you can do much worse than Wipeout: The Game.

The 2000 N64 title Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Earth was a critically-acclaimed and insanely challenging shooter, one which unfortunately wasn’t ported over to North America until 7 years later on the Wii’s Virtual Console. Perhaps due to the game’s American popularity, and perhaps as an apology to its non-Asian fans, we now have a sequel. And even though it took developer Treasure more than ten years, Sin and Punishment 2: Star Successor is well worth the wait. The new game is even better than the original, engaging all levels of players without sacrificing challenge. Previous Treasure games like Ikaruga and Radian Silvergun are renowned among players for their hardcore levels of difficulty. Star Successor, however, offers three levels of difficulty and one of the smoothest control schemes yet on the Wii. Whereas other system controllers require you to aim and move the character with the same buttons, the Wii remote enables split-second aiming as well as movement. The new control scheme also allows the game to shake up traditional shooter gameplay. Dodging allows you momentary invincibility as you scoot across the screen, which is necessary when humongous, unavoidable lasers start criss-crossing the level. Melee attacks are also a new component, and the game capitalizes on them by including a sword-fight and a fist-fight.There are a few downsides, and only because they’re all but unavoidable. First, the game is shortmost players will be able to finish in six hours or less. But shooters like this aren’t meant to be played once and put away, and that’s also the reason why the game’s ludicrous story doesn’t drag it down. You can forego paying any attention at all to the plot, and still get exactly what you deserve out of the game. Then, you can go back and play it as another character, or try it with a friend. It’ll make all but the most grudging gamers forget that whole thing about the first game, and just enjoy the thrill of this one.

Here at Nintendo Wii Game Reviews, it’s our duty to play the bad games along with the good. That way, you don’t have to. Robin Hood: The Return of Richard is one of those unfortunate games that just doesn’t cut it. It’s disappointing when a smaller company’s game fails, since they’re working with less resources than the big-shots, but it’s hard to view Robin Hood as much more entertaining than an iPhone game. Oh wait, what’s thisit was ported to WiiWare from the iPhone? That changes everything! In all honesty, Robin Hood would make for an entertaining few hours if you stumbled across it online one day. Enemies come in endless waves and you shoot them with the A button, reloading with the B when necessary. The arrows are invisible, and enemies disappear when hit, so don’t look forward to any interesting death animations, either. Anybody looking for something more than this will be sorely disappointed, though, and as such, it’s hard to justify the 5.00 WiiWare asking price. The game is also pitifully short, with twelve 3-minute levels. There’s one boss fight at the end, and single-image storyboards in between some levels to add the illusion of a story. If you’re actually interested in that, though, you’d be better off renting Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood film which was released earlier this yearand which this title obviously sought to capitalize off. There is one amusing upside if you still go through with purchasing the game, and that’s the music. Fast and catchy, it’s completely unrelated to the medieval feel of the game, or to anything, really. If you’re in quick need of a 5.00 party mix, just put this on at the next shindig and get some unlucky friend to play through it. That’s about the best recommendation I can give.

Japanese video-gamers love monsters, and they’ve got the franchises to prove them. Pokemon has been successfully transplanted to the point where it might be considered an American icon as much as Japanese, and Monster Rancher enjoyed a brief period of success. Monster Hunter is a more mature series than either of those, and coincidentally also the one that hasn’t caught on as easily. Monster Hunter 2 for the Playstation 2 did have some success, but something still wasn’t clicking. Now comes Monster Hunter Tri, and this time might be the charm. The most obvious thing about the game is that it is big, in so many ways. First, there are the monsters you’ll hunt. The models fill the screen and provoke wonder and fear (I have to kill that thing?) in equal parts. An early encounter with a Wyvern named Lagriacrus makes this point for the game very succinctly. The game’s scope is also huge. Considering all the exploration and customization possible, it’s very easy to spend over a hundred hours with the game. And that’s not even counting online play.Much of your time will be spent gathering materials (some of which you’ll have to kill) to create your weapons and armor. Unlike most traditional role-playing games, you won’t find yourself traveling from town to town, or even leveling up. However, more money and better weapons are necessary as you progress through the game, so you will spend time running quests. There’s no turn-based combat system here. Instead, you have to fight naturally, timing each swing and strike and aiming for the most vital points. It can be difficult, and it can be tiring, but it increases the sense of accomplishment a hundredfold. To increase the realism, there aren’t any health bars. Monsters near death will start to drool or act strangely, but this doesn’t mean they’re not a threat.Monster Hunter Tri is definitely a game that requires patience, but it’s also one that’s rewarding, fun, and more epic than anything on the Wii, especially when you take it online. For that, Americans might want to take a look.

When LEGO first started concentrating on video games in the late 1990s, I was a skeptic. But somehow the company has made a name for itself producing family-friendly titles that capitalize on a license and still appeal to serious gamers. The company can now add LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 to that illustrious list.Gameplay will be familiar to anyone who has played a LEGO game before. Players advance through the game by collecting and exploring. In the Harry Potter universe, this includes unlocking spells and mixing potions. Spells are all recognizable from the books and necessary for successful gameplay, such as using Wingardium Leviosa to reach higher bricks and Lumos to defeat plant enemies. Mini-games come into play with “Student in Peril” missions, where players compete challenges to help a fellow Hogwarts classmate. The four years of the title refers to the first four books of the series, of which developer Traveler’s Tales is obviously a fan. Each year is accessible from the “hub world” of the Leaky Cauldron, just the first of the many ingenious ways in which the HP universe is integrated into the game. Another is the many un-lockable characters, including such random but hilarious choices as Victor Krum as a shark. Other scenes from the movies are played out for comedic effect and offer plenty of inspiration to continue on.The same problems that have plagued LEGO’s video games from the beginning are also there to some extent, although much improved over earlier titles. Platforming can be difficult in parts, and AI can be hit-or-miss, although you’ll be surprised at how quickly your LEGO-person partners will respond to your needs. You can also switch easily between characters, which is useful since every figure has their own special ability, from Harry’s invisibility cloak to Dumbledore’s time-turner.If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ll love this game automatically. However, with what Traveller’s Tales and LEGO have accomplished (to my continuing amazement), even hardcore gamers can get in on the fun.
